1787 to the Present - A Restoration in Progress
1998 Annual Report, Wallblake House, Anguilla
Annual Report
Wallblake Restoration Committee
November 1998
Early this year it was decided it was time to form subcommittees to handle
the growing amount of work of the core group. Therefore, we have formed a:
- Historical Research Committee. Ads have been placed in local
papers requesting any information on the history of the house.
Committee members have been interviewing any persons that may have
information about the house as well as researching all documents.
- Architectural/Building Committee. First priority was to draw up
"as is" plans. From these plans we are making decisions as how to
proceed and prepare construction drawings.
- Fund Raising Committee. This committee is organizing the 1998
raffle, which will be drawn on Nov 25, 1998. The raffle is for a
weeks all-expense-paid vacation (including air fare) at the
Sonesta Beach Resort in Anguilla. Next year's raffle will be an
all-expense-paid vacation (incuding air fare) at the
Malliouhana Hotel in Anguilla. More later about how to purchase
tickets for the raffle. First large event to be held by the
committee will be an auction to be held on Feb 5, 1999. We have
been very encouraged by the response of the local population in
offering items for the auction.
A portion of our funds has been spent in the purchase of the timer and
the wallaba shingles. The land has been cleared and the termite
extermination of the main house and out buildings is completed.
Most of the structural work and stabilization on the out buildings
is complete and work will begin on the main house soon.
We have adopted a plan by David Rollinson
of Heritage Tourism as
a guide in the restoration process.
We are now in the process of developing a long-term lease in order to
assure the continued use of the house and grounds as a cultural center
for Anguilla.
Funds raised so far is US$82,780.01
