1787 to the Present - A Restoration in Progress
Prepared For:
The Wallblake House Trust
August 1998
Prepared By:
The Wallblake House Trust, a community-based organization, has undertaken to carry out this conservation of the standing structures of Wallblake, and provide public access to the site and house once the conservation programme has been implemented.
Wallblake House is currently in the ownership of the Diocese of St. Johns-Basseterre and the Trust must reach an agreement with the Diocese regading stewardship of the house and site before implementing a conservation programme.
While the house appears to be in reasonable structural condition, it is deteriorating rapidly. The implementation of any conservation work must be based on a thorough survey of the house and an assessment of the structure and fabric of the building. A study of the known history of the house and site will provide clues to many aspects of the house's design and construction and these factors must be taken into consideration when carrying out the planning necessary for the timely and efficient implementation of conservation work.
Stabilization and protection of the structure is the first priority in any conservation programme and this work should be undertaken on the house as soon as possible after the survey has identified the remedial work necessary. Restoration and repair should follow as soon as possible afterwards.
As public access will be part of the strategy to ensure the long-term future of Wallblake House, consideration should be given to any changes determined by this public use. Any public-access programme should be tailored to fit the house, not the reverse.
The conservation of Wallblake House is a project that can be accomplished by the community on Anguilla, with some specialist outside help. Volunteers will be essential in fund-raising and site work and the establishment of a strong volunteer organization should be a priority for the Trust.
With the adoption of this document as a guide, with the establishment of a strong and resourceful organization and a committment to carrying out the necessary conservation work in a responsible and effective manner, Wallblake House cn be preserved for future generations of Anguillians and can continue to make a contribution to the cultural and economic life of the island.
