PAKISTAN GAIN UPPER HANDThe West Indies cricket team lost for the first time in six matches this past Wednesday when they were defeated in the first of three Cable and Wireless one-day finals against Pakistan at Kensington Oval in Barbados.
West Indies captain, Jimmy Adams lost the toss and was asked to bowl for the first time in the one-day series. Pakistan scored steadily but lost two early wickets in Shahid Afridi (17) and Imran Nazir (12), but as Younis Khan (23) was joined by Inzamam-ul-Haq (66) Pakistan made a recovery with a 49 run partnership. It was obvious that the game was going to be dominated by slow scoring as both batsmen, who are typically attacking, struggled to put together the first substantial partnership of the innings from 18 overs. After Khan was brilliantly run out by Jimmy Adams and Ridley Jacobs, however, the wheels of the Pakistani innings began to come off.
Wickets fell at regular intervals and at one point Pakistan were 144 for 8 with just 8 overs remaining. However, experience once again displayed its worth as Wasim Akram (42 not out from 36 balls) played with authority as he and Mushtaq Ahmed (11 not out) lifted Pakistans total to 197 for 8 from 50 overs. The West Indies bowlers bowled with continued accuracy and consistency as Reon King claimed 2 for 37 and was ably assisted by Ambrose, McLean, Adams and Gayle who all picked up 1 wicket apiece.
In reply, the West Indies never truly got going. They made a valiant effort to pace themselves for the chase but continued to fall too far behind the required run rate. After Campbell fell for just 11, Philo Wallace (47) and Wavell Hinds (35) plodded along as they built a partnership of 87 from 24.3 overs. Like the Pakistani innings, wickets then began to fall at regular intervals as the lower order batsmen realised that they were under immense pressure to score runs quickly. Only Sylvester Bouncin Joseph, in his debut was capable of guiding the West Indies toward the Pakistani total as he crashed 28 from 32 balls with 1 four and a six. His teammates crumbled around him as the West Indies innings closed at 180 all out. All-rounder, Shahid Afridi was the pick of the bowlers as he cleaned up the lower order with 3 for 16 and pacer Waqar Younis claimed 2 for 34.
It was a disappointing start to the West Indies 3 match finals as much was expected of them as they crushed Zimbabwe in the two test series and won 4 one days in a row. However, the spirit within the dressing room is still very high and after the match, West Indies captain, Jimmy Adams expressed that he is still a believer that the West Indies will win the inaugural three-way one-day series in the Caribbean.

CABLE AND WIRELESS CRUISE AGAIN
Leon Lake during his innings of 33.
The Cable and Wireless Cricket Club cruised past the All-stars Cricket Club this past weekend in the CCB sponsored Local League Cricket Tournament en-route to their second victory in as many matches. It was a keenly contested battle which pitted two of the strongest clubs on the island.Winning the toss and batting first the All-stars struggled to 112 all out on the first day. Only the in-form Leon Lake (33) was capable of providing any resistance for the All-tars as he added another decent score to his name. Wiley off-spinner, Paulivor Rogers claimed 5 wickets as he destroyed the All-stars middle order while pacer, Terry Adams captured 3 wickets
In reply, Cable and Wireless got off to another prolific start as their Captain, Alex Adams smashed his way to an entertaining knock of 80 and was ably assisted by his brother Terry Adams who added a solid knock of 63 to his three wickets. Opener, Rhon Rogers also chipped in with a typically flashy 22 that helped his side to 224 all out. Off-spinner, Rudolph Proctor, was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets while pacer, Marlon Martin and off-spinner, Omari Banks claimed 2 wickets apiece.
Cable and Wireless celebrate the wicket of Omari Banks.
The All-stars second turn at the crease proved to be better then their first, but it still was not enough. Veteran, Rudolph Proctor added to his three wickets with a knock of 53 and was ably assisted by Tyrone Hughes who played well for his 47. The All-stars were eventually all out for 184 and Paulivor Rogers took his match total to 11 wickets as he spun his way to 6 more in the second innings.
This left the Cable and Wireless Cricket Club just 72 to score for victory, which they did, in convincing fashion, with just one wicket down. Alex Adams added another innings of quality to his already prolific season as he finished with 49 not out. Rhon Rogers also aided his teams cause as he finished with 20.
The CCB Local League continues this weekend with the ALHCS Spartans taking on the Nagico Upsetters Cricket Club.

ROSE BLOOMS BRIGHTThe West Indies cricket team romped to their fifth victory in as many matches this past Wednesday when they crushed Pakistan at Arnos Vale in St. Vincent in the Cable and Wireless one-day tournament.
Upon winning the toss, West Indian captain, Jimmy Adams elected to bat. The West Indies got off to a steady start when openers Philo Wallace (21) and Sherwin Campbell (22) worked their way to 49 before Wallace was bowled by Mushtaq Ahmed. Campbell quickly followed as the West Indies were pinned back at 55 for 2. A consolidation period followed for the West Indies as Adams (50) and fellow Jamaican, Wavell Hinds (39) took their time and put on 74 for the third wicket from 24 overs. Adams and Hinds played two controlled innings and saw out the heart of the Pakistani attack.
The West Indies, however, managed to score 213 form their 5o overs as they accumulated 75 runs from the last 10 overs. Chris Gayle (15), Ridley Jacobs (14 not out) and Ricardo Powell (12) all managed to score quickly and aided their side in posting a decent total. Mushtaq Ahmed, Abdur Razzaq and Arshad Khan all managed to claim two scalps each for Pakistan.
In reply, the Pakistanis never got going. Curtley Ambrose (1 for 12 from 8 overs) and Reon King (1 for 17 from 8 overs) bowled a controlled line and length as they frustrated the Pakistani top order batsmen. Franklyn Rose took advantage of the frustrated Pakistanis and bowled with continued aggression as he claimed career-best figures of 5 for 23 from his 10 overs. Wickets fell at regular intervals and only Inzamam-ul-Haq (50), Moin Khan (20) and Younis Khan (15) scored double figures. Nixon McLean also chipped in with two late wickets as Pakistan were bowled out for a mere 117 from 41.3 overs.
It was a remarkable victory and proved that West Indies recent success was not just a flash in the pan against a mediocre Zimbabwe team but a united effort under the new captaincy of Jimmy Adams.

WEST INDIES START WELL
Sherwin Campbell during his maiden one-day century.
The West Indies managed two emphatic victories in the Cable and Wireless three-way one-day tournament over the touring Zimbabweans this past Saturday and Sunday at Sabina Park in Jamaica. The two victories emphasized the West Indies rejuvenated spirit and their recent return to form.
In the first match, Andy Flower won the toss for Zimbabwe and asked the home team to bat. The tourists started reasonably well as Henry Olonga and Gary Brent claimed the wickets of Philo Wallace (6) and Chris Gayle (4) as the West Indies were set back at 41 for 2. Sherwin Campbell (103) and Jimmy Adams (60), however, accumulated a massive third wicket partnership of 141. Campbell played with authority as he registered his maiden one-day international century and Adams kept rotating the strike as they quickly took the West Indian total to 181. Ridley Jacobs also smashed a quick-fire 32 from just 25 balls to help the West Indies to 237 for 9 from their 50 overs.
In reply, the Zimbabweans never kept up with the scoring rate and were dismissed for 150 from just 41.4 overs. Murray Goodwin (52) and Stuart Carlisle (37) were the only batsmen with scores of substance as they shared in an 86 run partnership. The West Indian pacers bowled with control and frustrated the Zimbabweans. Jimmy Adams was the pick of the bowlers as his gentle left arm spin claimed 3 for 19. King, Dillon and Ricardo Powell also picked up 2 wickets apiece.
In the second match Jimmy Adams won the toss and elected to bat. Sherwin Campbell played some fluent strokes for his 21 and Wallace struggled for 18. However, with the fall of the two openers to the bowling of Gary Brent, Wavell Hinds and Jimmy Adams were brought together and shared in a third wicket partnership of 95 before Adams was run out for 41. Hinds and Gayle then put on a brilliant display of batting which was the highlight of the match. Hinds played a dashing innings of 116 not out from 125 deliveries and Gayle played with the fluency of a real stroke-player as he raced to 58 from just 45 deliveries and helped West Indies to 280 for 3 from 50 overs.
Zimbabwes scoring rate was never going to be enough to force a victory as they ambled to 239 for 9 from 50 overs. Carlisle top scored with 57 and shared in a 69 run partnership with Andy Flower (52). Guy Whittal also aided the Zimbabweans cause with 29. Reon King was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 27 as the West Indian bowlers once again bowled with great accuracy.
Pakistan join the series this Wednesday as they take on Zimbabwe in Antigua and the West Indies continue their series in Grenada this Saturday against Pakistan.

A NEW WEST INDIES?
Walsh kisses the pitch after claiming his 435th Test Wicket.
The West Indies Cricket Team stormed to a 2-0 series victory over Zimbabwe this past weekend at Sabina Park in Jamaica. It was one of the most entertaining matches for West Indian fans in recent years as it saw the world record of most test wickets broken by Courtney Walsh, the return of newly appointed captain Jimmy Adams with his first test hundred since 1996 and the coming of age of young pacers Franklyn Rose and Reon King.
Upon winning the toss Zimbabwe chose to bat on a hard, quick Sabina pitch that looked like a batsmens paradise. The West Indies started well and had the visitors on the ropes at 40 for 3, however, a 176 fourth wicket partnership between Murray Goodwin (113) and Andy Flower (66) soon changed that. Goodwin was particularly severe on the wide short deliveries as he registered a brilliant century and was unluckily run out just before the close on the first day. King bowled with extreme aggression and pace as he captured 5 for 51.
Chasing 308 was not going to be easy, however, the West Indies pulled together and Jimmy Adams played a remarkable captains innings of patience and poise. Adams (101 not out) and Rose (69) set a West Indies record with an eighth wicket partnership of 148. Rose played with authority and crashed some huge sixes over square leg as Adams played the anchor and quietly registered his sixth test century. When the West Indies were all out for 339 Zimbabwe were against the wall.
The West Indies bowlers came out firing and shot out the Zimbabweans for just 102. Walsh finally broke the record with 3 for 21 and immediately received a phone call from India from the former record holder, Kapil Dev, congratulating him. Both Rose and King picked up 2 wickets apiece as the West Indies were set just 78 for victory. Griffith (54 not out) and Campbell (16 nor out) made light work of the modest total as they cemented a memorable victory and a series sweep.
Captain Adams received man of the match for his wonderful innings and Rose won man of the series for his fiery bowling and his very important innings of 69. The West Indies now go on to take part in a three-way one-day tournament between themselves, Zimbabwe and Pakistan.
