You may have read about visitor Heidi Hughey and her "childrens books" project in The Anguillian newspaper. Here is how Heidi describes it:
"I have been coming to Anguilla for the 10 plus years. After several years of sheer bliss, I tried to think of a way to give back to the island which continues to give me such pleasure."

"I am an Educator in the U.S. and decided a bag of children's books delivered to the school nearest Cap Juluca (my home a way from home) would be a small way to say Thank-you. What started about 5 yrs. ago, I have continued on each return."

"I began to think... What would happen if every guest at the hotel brought one book and gave them to the West End School...then what if EVERY visitor brought one book and these books were shared equally among all the island primary schools. I hoped someone could come up with a catchy phrase...If you have room in your beach bag, please bring a children's book..."

"These books would be used in the Anguilla schools to foster the pleasure of Reading. Teachers could use these books in ways that are best in their classroom; individualized instruction, reading groups, home assignments, book reports, D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read), etc."

"Teacher Art has been supportive of my idea and we hope somehow to implement this idea. If this information is on a website the drop off point could be at the West End Primary school with Teacher Art distributing the books equitably around the island or if the hotels become involved perhaps a collection at their hotel.....if it really takes off...A box at the airport!"

"I believe in this simple concept and hope it's implementation will be successful."

Tape Recorders and CD Players

We have received a lot of books - thanks and keep it up. But now we could use some tape recorders and CD players, simple ones that can plug into an electrical outlet and have an earphone plug, so we can have 6-8 earphones off each one if necessary.

The reason for this is that these recorders are used as listening centres and thus the children can listen to stories while reading the books to the same story.

Reading and Tape Sets We Could Use!

Once we get enought tape and CD players for the children, we will need books and matching CD/tapes to go with them.

Here are some that would work great:

Big Book of Classroom Poems

Multisensory Strategies: Lessons and Classroom Management Techniques to Reach and Teach All Learners

Feedback from Visitors!

Mike Bass of Cherry Hill, NJ writes:
We made our 4th trip to Anguilla last week, and are now home. We met with Art at the Alwyn Allison Primary School, and upon our return have made tremendous headway in getting books to Anguilla. A local school near to me in NJ donated lots of used taxtbooks: Spelling, history, health, etc, as well as a printer and a scanner. Three couples, regulars to Anguilla, are buying PM Reader 2 series as a donation, I have already notified Art of this. Many others are sending cases of books. Anguilla will soon have more books than it know what to do with!

I am in daily communication with Art on everything, and he seems to have a good handle on it. Anything more we can do let us know, but the participation is growing!   June 9, 2004
