Top tennis pro to assist with tennis camp

ANGUILLA�Johan Kriek, a top tennis professional will be in Anguilla from July 26-29 to assist with the Tennis Camp now in its second week. Kriek was ranked in the top twenty from 1980 to 1985, with a career best world ranking of #7 in 1984. He won fifteen singles titles and twelve doubles titles. He won the Australian Open twice and was in the semi final of the US Open in 1980.

Camp Director, Mitchelle Lake told the Daily Herald, �I am honoured that Kriek accepted my invitation to assist with the programme. His involvement with the Anguilla Tennis Academy will certainly help to boost its credibility.�

Next week the camp moves to the Malliouhana Hotel and Carimar Resort tennis courts at Meads Bay. This is because there are five coaches from the USA joining the three from Anguilla, Mitchelle Lake, Damien Hughes and Iston Benjamin, and will give more opportunity for the 175 children who are participating. There will be several fun competitions during the week that will end with a tournament for the different age groups and exhibition matches from the coaches.

This is the fifth tennis camp organized by Mitchelle Lake and Damien Hughes for children aged from seven to eighteen and is sponsored by BET television, Wilson Sports Goods, Carson Products, American Airlines/American Eagle and many local businesses. The coaches, who will be in Anguilla next week along with Johan Kriek, include James Schor of Wilson Caribbean Sales, Maria Lopez from Venezuela, who is ranked No 1 in her country, and teaching pros from the USA, Leandro Gutierrez and Oscar Escribano.

Kriek is staying at Malliouhana Hotel and the other coaches are staying at Carimar Beach Resort and Frangipani Beach Club.
