Anguilla and St. Kitts Play To A Draw.

The Anguilla National cricket team played to a draw this past weekend against St. Kitts at the Ronald Webster Park. Anguilla were coming off two resounding victories against Montserrat the week before in both the one-day and three-day format of the tournament.

Upon winning the toss, Anguillian captain and Leeward Islands opener, Alex Herbal Adams elected to bat on a pitch that looked full of runs. However, Anguilla did not make the most of the favourable conditions and were quickly 48 for 2 with opener Leon Lake (13) and Carlos Sasso (2) back in the pavilion. This brought together skipper Adams (60) and Zach Kenworthy (27) who put together the most substantial partnership of the innings that of 55 runs. Adams played freely and continued his fine season with the bat as Kenworthy played the supporting role. The only other substantial contribution with the bat came from pacer Richard Stevens who played a cameo innings of 20 and helped his team to 188 all out. Leg-spinner Sheldon Jeffers was the pick of the bowlers and bowled consistently throughout the innings as he claimed 6 Anguillian wickets.

In reply, St. Kitts couldnt have asked for a better start as 18 year old Shane Jeffers (116) and Leewards opener, Junie Mitchum (90) put together a mammoth opening partnership of 182. Mitchum played as freely as Adams did for Anguilla while Jeffers played some exquisite cover drives as they both almost whiped off the Anguillian total themselves. However, Anguilla came back admirably and took ten wickets for 97 runs as St. Kitts were eventually bowled out for 275. Only off-spinner Francis was capable of scoring double figures down the order as he put together a quick 23.

Facing a deficit of 87 with over a day to bat Anguilla had to put their heads down and concentrate. However, with Sasso (5), Kenworthy (4) and Lake (11), who was unfortunately given out caught off his pad, all back in the pavillion things were never going to be easy. However, skipper Alex Adams came to the rescue once again and registered his second century of the young season with a smashing even 100. Adams looked the part and played a very important captains innings. He was also well supported by Rudolph Proctor (23), Chaka Hodge (37) and his brother Terry Adams (52) who all batted very responsibly. Hodge and Terry Adams had a particularly important 50 partnership as they practically snatched the match away from the Kittitians. Pauliver Rogers also batted patiently at the end an ensured that Anguilla sailed into safer waters at 280 for 7 at the close of play and just 10 days before Anguilla Day.

The one-day match, however, was rained out almost half way through the match. In the only innings of the match, Anguilla batted and were 148 for 6 after 44 overs. The Kittitian spinners bowled with great accuracy and restricted the Anguillian batsmen to limited scoring. Captain Alex Adams played a very patient and important captains innings once again with 58 as he safely guided his side to better waters after a shaky start. Rudolph Proctor also batted well for a quick-fire 33 before he was run out and before the rains cut the match short. Both teams collected 1 point each from the washed out fixture.

The Anguilla team have a rest week this week, as do all teams for the Antigua Test Match, but travel to Antigua next week Wednesday to take on Antigua in a three-day fixture and a one-day fixture.

Hinds, Sarwan: Future Stars

The second test between the West Indies and Pakistan in Barbados was drawn this past Monday after some brilliant cricket and a gripping final days play that saw the home side batting their way to a draw amidst great tension and against a formidable Pakistani bowling attack.

On winning the toss Pakistani captain, Moin Khan elected to bat on what looked to be a perfect batting pitch. The decision was initially the right one. However, the Pakistani batsmen did not take advantage of the flat Kensington pitch and were in trouble at 37 for 5 on the first day when Yousef Youhana and his skipper were brought together. Youhana (115) played with extreme class as his first test century in the West Indies was glittered with 14 fours. He showed patience and batted with a wonderful temperament as he was ably assisted by Moin Khan (38) and Wasim Akram (42) who both scored freely on the Kensington pitch as Pakistan scored 253 all out. Courtney Walsh was the pick of the bowlers, as he has been so many times before in his illustrious career, with remarkable figures of 5 for 22 from just 13 overs.

In reply, the West Indies couldnt have asked for a better start as Sherwin Campbell (58) and Wavell Hinds (165) put together a 133 second wicket partnership. Campbell was severe on the Pakistani bowling attack as he dispatched anything short of a good length to the boundary and clobbered two massive sixes off Akram and Younis over the square leg boundary. However, it was Hinds who stole the show with his first test century. He played with extreme freedom and was not afraid to use his feet to the Pakistani spinners, especially Saqlain, who he chipped back down the ground to bring up his century. His innings consisted of 24 fours and one six.

It was the young Guyanese, 19 year old Ramnaresh Sarwan, who continued the West Indian onslaught after Hinds departure as he played with the confidence of a seasoned veteran on his debut. He registered his first half century and kept together the lower half of the West Indies innings quite admirably as he finished with 84 not out from 232 balls. Seasoned pacers,Curltley Ambrose and Curtley Walsh both helped the West Indies score with two equally important innings of 22 that took the home team to a score of 398 all out. Saqlain Mustaq bowled with continued agression as he spun his way to figures of 5 for 121 from 51 overs.

Pakistans second turn at the wicket got off to a flyer as Mohammed Wasim (82) and 19 year old Imran Nazir (131) put together an opening partnership of 219. Nazir played superbly in just his second test match as he spanked 20 boundaries. Both batted admirably and mixed control with aggression. The only other major partnership of the innings was between Abdur Razzaq (72) and Saqlain Mustaq (33) who accumulated a very important stand of 70 that took the Pakistanis up to 419 for 9 before Moin Khan called in his troops in an effort to bowl out the West Indies before they scored 275 for victory. Reon King spearheaded the West Indian attack with 4 for 82 and bowled typically fast with good control.

With a minimum of 57 overs the West Indian batsmen decided just to play for a draw instead of risking their wickets in an effort to score 275 against the Pakistani spinners on the last day of the test. Wavell Hinds played freely once again with 52 and his skipper Adams ended on 32 not out as the West Indies plodded to 132 for 4 at the close. Hinds won man of the match for his two, highly entertaining innings that highlighted the brilliant batting that was evident throughout this high scoring and exciting affair.

Two draws in the first two test matches sets up the third and final test in Antigua at the ARG to be a very exciting and keenly fought battle. No doubt both sides will be hoping for a victory and this may produce some of the most exciting cricket of the tour.

ANGUILLA BEGIN WITH A BANG

The Anguilla National Cricket team started the 2000 Liat Sponsored Leeward Islands Cricket Tournament with a bang this past weekend at the Ronald Webster Park when they defeated Montserrat in both the three-day and one-day matches.

In the three-day match that began last Thursday, Montserrat won the toss and asked the home team to bat first. Anguilla started well with a 59 run opening partnership between skipper and Leeward Islands opener, Alex Adams and Leon Lake who put together a solid 22 before he was caught behind. Zachary Kenworthy, who scored 19, then joined Adams as they put together an even more substantial partnership of 74. Another solid 50-run partnership between Adams and his brother Terry (18) also followed but the most substantial batting of the day came when Pauliver Rogers (19) added 100 with his skipper.

The most spectacular performance of the day, however, came from Alex Adams himself who crashed his way to 208. It was his second time he had ever passed 200 in the Leeward Islands Tournament after his record breaking 308 not out against the Virgin Islands a couple of years ago. His innings lasted 252 balls, 282 minutes and was laced with 27 crisp boundaries. It was a most admirable performance by the Anguillian skipper who helped his side amass 342 all-out.

West Indies under-15 pacer was the pick of the bowlers for Montserrat as he claimed 4 for 62 from 14 overs. He was well supported by former West Indies youth pacer Tyrone Greenaway who claimed 3 for 100 and Oakland Graves, 2 for 62.

In reply, Montserrat were skittled out for a mere 131. Only captain Devon Williams (34), Mark Stephanie (29) and Gregory Willock (27) managed substantial scores. The Anguillian pacers bowled with tremendous pace and fire, howver it was off-spinner Pauliver Rogers who was the pick of the bowlers with a tremendous spell of 6 for 30 from 12.1 overs. Pacer Eversley Browne also claimed 2 wickets.

Seeing that Montserrats first innings score was more than 150 runs behind Anguillas, Alex Adams asked the Montserrat team to bat again. Although they batted far better than in the first innings, 189 was just not enough. Only wicketkeeper David Lane managed to fight off the Anguillian bowling attack with an even 100. He was also well supported by Tyrone Greenaway who played a cameo innings of 40. Offspinner, Chaka Hodge was the pick of the bowlers with an attacking spell of 5 for 45 from 19.2 overs. Richard Stevens also claimed 2 wickets.

In the one-day match on Sunday Montserrat won the toss again and elected to bat as they accumulated 184 all-out from 49.1 overs. Mark Stephanie top scored with 49 and was ably assisted by David Lane who added to his century in the three-day match with a solid 44. Tyrone Greenaway also supported his teams cause with a quick-fire 26. Pacer, Eversley Browne was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 23 and was very well supported by offspinner Chaka Hodge who claimed 3 for 33.

In reply, Anguilla made the victory more difficult than it actually should have been and were somewhat struggling at 78 for 4 with Alex Adams (10), Lake (17), Carlos Sasso (14) and Kenworthy (15), who all got starts, back in the pavilion. However, Rudolph Proctor and Terry Adams steadied the ship into safer waters, but when Proctor was dismissed for 30 Anguillas situation became more uncertain. However, Chaka Hodge added a quick 17 to Anguillas total and Adams finished on 43 not out which turned the game into Anguillas favour. Adams played with a cool head and saw his team through to victory in a very tense one-day.

The Liat Leeward Islands Tournament continues this weekend at the RWP with Anguilla taking on rivals St. Kitts in the three-day match from Thursday to Saturday and in the one-day on Sunday.

LIAT LEEWARD ISLANDS TOURNAMENT BEGINS

The LIAT sponsored Leeward Islands Cricket Tournament begins this Thursday the 11th of May at the Ronald Webster Park in Anguilla. The first Round of the tournament will pit defending one-day Champions, Anguilla against Montserrat in the three day match from Thursday the 11th to Saturday the 13th and in the one-day match on Sunday the 14th.

Montserrat, who have not entered the Tournament for the past two years due to the Volcanic activity which has ravaged the island, have managed to enter this year and will take part as normal.

Anguilla, on the other hand, are the defending one-day Champions and are hoping to repeat their one-day success as well as improve and hopefully win the three-day competition. At the helm will be seasoned Leewards opener Alex Adams and his deputy will be Chaka Hodge. The Anguilla team is generally a good mix of seasoned players like Adams himself as well as Paulivor Rogers, Terry Adams, Rudolph Proctor and Eversley Browne as well as promising youth like Leon Lake, Marlon Martin Zachary Kenworthy, Richard Stevens and Girdon Connor. The team, however, will miss the services of young Omari Banks who left the island for England for a two-month spell with Leicestershire County Cricket Club where he will play second XI cricket. The team, is hoping, however, not to miss the services of Banks and to perform consistently throughout the tournament in an effort to win both competitions.

Only one other match will be played this weekend, which is between Nevis and the Combined Virgin Islands in St. Croix. The full Anguilla squad reads:- Alex Adams (captain), Chaka Hodge (vice captain), Terry Adams, Paulivor Rogers, Marlon Martin, Zachary Kenworthy, Rudolph Proctor, Carlos Sasso, Leon Lake, Eversley Browne, Richard Stevens, Girdon Connor, Mitchell Harrigan, Clarence Fleming-Rogers, Cardigan Connor (coach) and Sam Webster (manager).

AN ALL-STAR VICTORY

The All-Star Cricket Club romped to victory over the young ALHCS Spartans this past weekend at the Ronald Webster Park. Upon winning the toss, the Spartans elected to bat first and were skittled out for just 101 after a very entertaining 61-run opening partnership between Wendell Samuel (18) and Zachary Kenworthy (39). The only other batsman to reach double figures was Travis Carter who smashed his way to a quick-fire 21.

Omari Banks was the main destroyer for the All-Stars as he started off a brilliant weekend with figures of 6 for 32. He spun the ball venomously and extracted much bounce from the pitch. Corwin Carty also bowled well as he claimed 3 for 25.

In reply, the All-Stars crushed the Spartans bowling attack as they scored a mammoth 303 all-out. Omari Banks added to his 6 first innings wickets with a brilliant knock of 123. His century was laced with 20 fours and included many scintillating cover drives and brutal pulls. He was very well assisted by Marlon Martin (56) who scored his first half century of the year, Richard Bradshaw (40), Leon Lake (39) and Corwin Carty (16). Fourteen year-old legspinner, Maurice Burleigh was the pick of the bowlers with 5 for 42. Chaka Hodge also bowled steadily as he captured 3 for 66.

Needing at least 202 to have a chance to save the match, the Spartans crumbled once again, this time for a paltry 70. Lyndel Richardson (15) and Duquain Lake (11) were the only batsmen to reach double figures. Omari Banks capped off a brilliant match with returns of 6 for 18, his personal best. Trevor Fabian also chipped in with 2 for 17.

The CCB Local League Cricket Tournament continues this weekend with the Cable and Wireless Cricket Club taking on the Nagico Up-Setters Cricket Club.

A SPARTAN SURPRISE

The CCB sponsored Local League Cricket Tournament continued this past weekend with the ALHCS Spartans taking on the Nagico Up-Setters. The young Spartans equipped themselves creditably as they performed consistently throughout the match and drew the game with first innings honours.

Upon winning the toss, the ALHCS Spartans elected to bat and amassed 164. Zach Kenworthy top scored with a solid 43 and was ably assisted by 13 year-old Lyndel Richardson (31) as they shared in a 76 run partnership. Both batted well and were ably assisted by a quick-fire 28 from pacer Eversley Browne and a patient 22 from captain, Chaka Hodge. Oris Smith was the pick of the bowlers as he captured 5 for 72 as Clarence Fleming and Richard Stevens chipped in with 3 and 2 wickets respectively.

In reply, the Up-Setters began well as Clarence Fleming (63) and Carlos Sasso (38) shared in a 74 run opening partnership. Sasso was particularly severe on the pace bowlers and was assisted by the patience of Fleming. However, the Up-Setters were eventually bowled out for 160, 5 runs short of a first innings lead, as no other batsmen scored double figures. Travis Carter was the best of the bowlers with 5 for 32 and off-spinner, Chaka Hodge helped with 3 for 30.

In the second innings, the Spartans managed to score an even higher total than in the first. Zach Kenworthy top scored again with 52 and shared in a 74 run partnership with Chaka Hodge who scored 48. Both batted well and scored quickly as they displayed an array of fine strokes around the ground. Eversley Browne (18) helped out once again as he played some brutal heaves to the boundary. Opener Wendell Samuel (14) also chipped in with a helpful knock. Oris Smith added to his 5 first innings wickets with 4 for 42 but was matched by Clarence Fleming who claimed 4 for 25.

Chasing 184 from 33 overs for victory was never going to be easy for the Up-Setters, however, the Spartans bowlers made life even more difficult for the Nagico batsmen. At the close, the Up-Setters were 123 for 7 with Keith Harrigan (34), Clarence Fleming (22) and Carlos Sasso (17) being the main contributors. Chaka Hodge bowled well as he claimed 4 for 39 and Travis Carter picked up another 2 wickets.

The CCB Local League continues this week when the ALHCS Spartans take on the All-Stars. All Articles can be found on the World Wide Web at http://www.sports.ai/

CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING COMING TO ANGUILLA

Championship boxing is to come to Anguilla this summer when an event called Hot Blood In Paradise takes place at The Landsome Bowl Cultural Centre on August 5th 2000 at 8pm. The event, which is being jointly organised by KO Round 1 Promotions and the Caribbean Boxing Federation (CBF), will include four feature fights that will lead up to the main event of the evening.

The main event is to contest the vacant title of the Caribbean Boxing Federation Super Middleweight Title which will be between Curacaos Marcelo Cheo Zimmerman and Ken The Tiger Sharpe. Zimmerman, whos record is 20-3 with 12 knock outs, was the UAIB and IBF Middleweight Champion in 1998 while Sharpe, whos record is 17-5 with 8 knock outs, is the number 1 contender as he is ranked #1 by the CBF. Zimmerman recently lost to Glen Johnson of Jamaica, but as one of the Caribbeans finest boxers, is making a return to top fighting form.

The fight, which will be 12 rounds, will be preceded by 4 feature fights, the first of which will be a 4 rounder between Floyd Trumpet and Shawn Blair. This will be Blairs first fight at this level as he is one of St. Maartens most promising young boxers. The second fight will be a 6 rounder and will be contested by Ria Ramnarine, who is ranked #5 by the CBO, and Johanna Alvariz, who is ranked #1 by the CBA and #2 by the CBF.

The third feature fight is also a 6 round fight and will feature Willma Skeeta, who is ranked #1 by the CBO and #2 by the CBA and Claudette Alexander, ranked #1 by the CBF, #2 by the CBO and #3 by the CBA. Alexander is the first ever woman to be promoted by KO Round 1 Promotions and the winner of this fight will contest Johanna Alvirez for the CBF and CBA titles in St. Maarten on September 30th.

The last of the feature fights before the main event will consist of 10 rounds and will contest the likes of Leary Bruce and Rafael Aviori Mato, who is attempting to return to his winning ways and to once again be a ranked boxer in the Caribbean.

KO Round 1 Promotions have been working with many of the Anguillian hotels in an effort to establish some official ties between Anguilla and Caribbean boxing so that additional sponsorship for this event and future events will be made available. KO Round 1 Promotions is also working with American Eagle so that all travel arrangements will be solely sponsored.

Cable Television deals to televise the event are also being hammered out at the present moment with the Caribbean Brodcasting Union (CBU) and ESPN International so that a worldwide audience can be reached. Ringside Tickets are priced at US$25 while all other seats are priced at just US$15.

For any additional information or to offer any additional services please contact Randy Webster of KO Round 1 Promotions at 497-5681.
